Family is everything and you would do anything to protect them. This is the underlying theme of Patriot Games. This does not only apply to nuclear families but non-nuclear families as well. There are many different types of families shown in this movie there are the Ryan's, the Miller's, the IRA, the CIA and even the royal family. Everything that happens in this movie is a chain reaction following the first incident of a threatened family beginning with the attempted assassination of the Royal family's relatives.

The IRA is an unlikely family but it is an extremely strong one nonetheless. The bond between the association is not one of blood but the title family is all to fitting. The Ryan family is a traditional nuclear family and is threatened by Sean Miller whose brother was killed by Jack Ryan. This is what caused Miller to go on a vendetta mission to get revenge for his deceased brother. These three families are the main focus of the movie and the lengths they go to to ensure their families safety or to avenge their family is the action that keeps the plot moving.
